The Shimano SM-SH56 SPD Cleat Set are multi-release SPD cleats designed for Shimano mountain bike clipless pedal systems, making them one of the easiest and most beginner-friendly cleat options in Shimano’s lineup.

What they are

These are:

  • 2-bolt SPD cleats
  • used for MTB, gravel, and trekking clipless pedals
  • designed for easy and safe disengagement

They work with almost all Shimano SPD pedals.

Key feature: Multi-release system

The SH-SH56 cleats are known as multi-release cleats, meaning you can unclip in several ways:

  • twist heel outward (normal SPD release)
  • twist heel inward (unusual but possible)
  • lift and twist foot upward under pressure

This makes them:

  • very beginner-friendly
  • useful in technical stops or panic situations
  • easier to get out of quickly than SH51 cleats

(Shimano specifically designed them for easier exit under stress)

Float and feel

  • Allow a small amount of foot movement (float)
  • Slightly more forgiving than race-style cleats
  • Stable enough for MTB control but less “locked-in” than SH51

Best suited for

  • Beginners using clipless pedals for the first time
  • MTB trail riding
  • Commuting and touring
  • Riders who want safer, easier release
  • Technical terrain where quick dismounts are important

Pros

  • Very easy to unclip
  • Works with nearly all Shimano SPD pedals
  • Good safety margin for beginners
  • Durable steel construction
  • Reliable Shimano fit and engagement

Trade-offs

  • Can feel slightly less secure than SH51 for aggressive riding
  • Not preferred by racers who want very firm retention
  • May release too easily in very technical/rocky riding for some advanced riders

Bottom line

The Shimano SH-SH56 cleats are easy-release SPD cleats designed for confidence and safety, making them ideal for new clipless riders, commuting, and general MTB use where quick and forgiving disengagement is more important than maximum retention.
